Enterprise Wireless Network Upgrade & Structured Cabling Deployment
Cisco Access Point Replacement and Fiber Backbone Installation Across Three Healthcare Facilities
This Maryland-based health organization was directed by Maryland DoIT to modernize its wireless network infrastructure across multiple facilities. The existing wireless access points (APs) at the primary location had become outdated and required replacement with newer, standards-compliant Cisco access points. Additionally, two remote facilities lacked the necessary structured cabling to support wireless connectivity, creating gaps in network coverage, performance, and reliability. To meet evolving operational and compliance requirements, the organization needed a comprehensive wireless network upgrade and structured cabling deployment that would enhance connectivity across all sites.
To address these challenges, the organization partnered with Data Networks to execute a full-scale enterprise wireless network upgrade, including access point replacement, new Ethernet cabling installation, and fiber optic backbone expansion. The project spanned three facilities, including a main administrative building and two remote healthcare service locations, all requiring coordinated implementation to ensure consistent network performance and minimal disruption to daily operations.
Data Networks initiated the project with detailed planning and coordination, aligning with customer stakeholders and state IT requirements to ensure all deployment activities met compliance standards. The team then began work at the main facility, where two new multi-mode fiber optic cable runs were installed to strengthen the network backbone between the main distribution frame (MDF) and intermediate distribution frames (IDFs). Existing pathways and infrastructure were leveraged to streamline installation while maintaining structural integrity and efficiency. Data Networks also configured uplink ports on existing network switches and connected the new fiber runs using customer-provided SFP optics, ensuring high-speed, reliable interconnectivity across floors.
As part of the Cisco access point deployment, Data Networks replaced twenty-two (22) legacy wireless access points at the main building with new units in a one-to-one configuration. Each AP was installed using existing mounting infrastructure, optimizing wireless coverage while minimizing installation complexity.
At the two remote facilities, Data Networks provided and installed new copper Ethernet cabling to support wireless connectivity in previously underserved areas. Access points were installed in strategic locations, including reception areas, hallways, conference rooms, and common spaces, ensuring comprehensive wireless coverage throughout each building. Special consideration was given to ceiling heights and layout variations to optimize signal distribution and performance.
All cabling and installation work was performed in accordance with BICSI standards by certified installers, ensuring high-quality workmanship and long-term reliability. The project also included daily site cleanup, adherence to standard working hours, and coordination with facility operations to minimize disruption.
Following installation, Data Networks conducted thorough validation to confirm wireless connectivity, network performance, and proper integration with the existing infrastructure. The engagement concluded with documentation and transition support, with ongoing management incorporated into the organization’s existing managed services agreement.
As a result, the organization now benefits from a modern, scalable, and fully optimized enterprise wireless network infrastructure, delivering improved coverage, enhanced performance, and a future-ready foundation for continued digital transformation.
