Veeam Immutable Backup Deployment & Data Protection Modernization

Ransomware-Resilient Backup Architecture with Immutable Storage, Advanced Monitoring, and Secure Workload Protection for Maryland Public School System

Q2 2023

This Maryland-based public school system identified the need to significantly strengthen its data protection strategy to safeguard mission-critical applications and sensitive information. With ransomware threats continuing to rise, the district required a more secure and resilient backup environment capable of preventing unauthorized data modification and ensuring rapid recovery. Existing systems lacked immutable storage capabilities and advanced threat detection, leaving critical workloads vulnerable. To address these risks, the organization prioritized the implementation of a Veeam immutable backup solution.

Data Networks designed and deployed a modernized backup architecture centered around Veeam Backup and Replication version 12, introducing enhanced security, scalability, and visibility across the environment. The solution incorporated both physical and virtual infrastructure upgrades, along with updated licensing to support the protection of up to 20 workloads within the district’s VMware environment.

The deployment included two new Dell PowerEdge servers, each serving a distinct role within the Veeam immutable backup architecture. One server, running Microsoft Windows Server, was configured to host the Veeam Backup and Replication platform. The second server, built on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, was dedicated to serving as an immutable backup repository. This Linux-based repository was configured with immutability controls to ensure that backup data could not be altered or deleted during the defined retention period, effectively protecting against ransomware and insider threats.

In addition to immutable storage, Data Networks enhanced the district’s visibility into backup operations by deploying Veeam ONE as a virtual appliance. This monitoring and analytics platform was configured to detect anomalies, including indicators of potential ransomware activity such as unexpected data encryption. Integration with the district’s existing endpoint detection and response solutions enabled automated scanning of backup data, further strengthening the organization’s cybersecurity posture.

All existing backup jobs were recreated and optimized within the new Veeam 12 environment, ensuring consistent protection across all workloads while improving performance and manageability. The solution also maintained compatibility with the existing Data Domain storage platform, allowing for a hybrid approach that balanced new capabilities with existing investments.

Comprehensive testing and validation were performed to confirm backup integrity, recovery capabilities, and the effectiveness of immutability controls. Data Networks verified that all workloads were properly protected and that recovery processes met the district’s operational requirements.

The project concluded with the decommissioning of legacy systems, reducing complexity and eliminating unsupported technologies. Data Networks also conducted knowledge transfer sessions to ensure the IT team could effectively manage and monitor the new environment.

As a result, the district now operates a secure, scalable, and highly resilient Veeam immutable backup solution, delivering robust protection against ransomware, improved operational visibility, and a future-ready foundation for data security.
