Hyper-V Virtualization Platform Modernization for Local College
Phased VMware-to-Hyper-V Migration Strategy for Multi-Data Center Infrastructure
Building a Cost-Predictable Virtualization Platform for Future Growth
This Maryland college sought to modernize its on-premises virtualization environment in response to rising VMware licensing costs, evolving subscription models, and increasing long-term uncertainty surrounding virtualization platform planning. The institution’s existing infrastructure spanned multiple data centers and included a mix of legacy and current-generation Dell compute and storage platforms, shared SAN fabrics, and multiple VMware clusters supporting production, test/dev, and DMZ workloads.
Rather than pursuing a disruptive, all-at-once migration strategy, the college partnered with Data Networks to implement a phased infrastructure modernization approach focused on platform enablement first. Phase 1 of the initiative established standardized Microsoft Hyper-V 2025 clusters across multiple campuses while leveraging the college’s existing investments in Dell PowerEdge servers, Dell PowerStore storage, and Extreme Networks switching infrastructure.
The result was a validated, production-ready Hyper-V platform that reduced vendor dependency, improved long-term cost predictability, and positioned the college for deliberate future workload migration decisions based on institutional priorities rather than technical urgency.
Addressing VMware Licensing Uncertainty Across Multiple Data Centers
The college’s virtualization environment had evolved over time to support a wide range of academic, administrative, and operational workloads across several data centers. Existing VMware clusters remained operationally stable and reflected years of thoughtful infrastructure investment. However, recent VMware licensing and support model changes introduced financial uncertainty and made long-term platform planning increasingly difficult.
The environment also included multiple generations of Dell storage technologies— including Dell Unity, Compellent, and PowerStore arrays— each with unique operational characteristics. Shared storage dependencies between VMware clusters created additional architectural complexity, making it difficult to modernize infrastructure incrementally without introducing operational risk.
At the same time, the college wanted to avoid forcing immediate application migrations or production workload cutovers. Institutional leadership prioritized a phased modernization strategy that would establish a stable and supportable virtualization platform first while preserving flexibility for future migration planning.
Deploying Standardized Hyper-V Clusters Across Multiple Campuses
Data Networks designed and deployed a standardized Hyper-V 2025 virtualization platform across the college’s three geographically diverse data centers. The solution leveraged existing Dell PowerEdge R670 servers, Dell PowerStore 500T storage systems, and established LAN and SAN infrastructure to minimize disruption and maximize the value of prior technology investments.

The Phase 1 deployment included:
- A four-node Hyper-V cluster supporting production and test/dev workloads
- A dedicated two-node Hyper-V cluster supporting DMZ workloads
- Additional two-node Hyper-V clusters at remote campus data centers
- Integration with existing Dell PowerStore shared storage platforms
- Cluster resiliency validation and storage connectivity testing
- Windows Admin Center deployment for centralized management
- Dell OpenManage integration for hardware monitoring and lifecycle management
- Azure Arc integration for centralized operational visibility and management
Importantly, the engagement intentionally excluded virtual machine migration, application cutover, backup reconfiguration, and VMware decommissioning activities. This phased approach allowed the college to establish a fully operational target virtualization platform while minimizing financial exposure and operational disruption.
Data Networks also provided architecture updates, operational validation, and knowledge transfer services to ensure the college’s IT team could confidently manage and support the new Hyper-V environment moving forward.
Delivering a Flexible Foundation for Future Virtualization Decisions
Upon completion of Phase 1, the college gained a validated and production-ready Hyper-V virtualization platform across all targeted data centers without disrupting existing workloads or requiring immediate migration timelines.
By leveraging existing infrastructure investments and implementing a measured, phased approach to virtualization modernization, Data Networks helped the institution reduce vendor dependency, improve operational consistency, and establish a flexible foundation for future infrastructure decisions. The new environment enables the college to plan future workload migrations strategically based on budget, business priority, and long-term institutional goals rather than reacting to licensing pressures or platform uncertainty.
