Juniper SRX Firewall Migration

Firewall Modernization and Security Infrastructure Upgrade for a Healthcare Technology Organization

Q4 2023

Replacing Aging Security Infrastructure with Modern Protection

This healthcare technology organization relied on three aging Juniper Networks NetScreen (NS)-series firewalls to provide internet connectivity, inter-site communications, and perimeter security services across its environment. As these legacy platforms approached end-of-life, the organization needed a modern security solution capable of maintaining critical protections while improving long-term reliability, scalability, and vendor support.

To address these challenges, the organization partnered with Data Networks to execute a strategic firewall modernization initiative. The project focused on replacing the existing Juniper NS firewalls with Juniper SRX300 Services Gateways while preserving existing security policies, VPN connectivity, and network functionality. Through careful planning and detailed analysis, Data Networks developed a migration strategy designed to minimize risk and ensure business continuity throughout the transition.

The objective was not only to replace aging hardware but also to establish a more resilient security foundation capable of supporting the organization’s future networking and cybersecurity requirements.

Firewall Migration for Seamless Security and Connectivity

As part of the engagement, Data Networks provided comprehensive firewall migration services to transition critical network security functions from the legacy Juniper NS platform to the new Juniper SRX Services Gateways. The project began with a thorough review of the existing firewall environment, including security zones, security policies, networking configurations, and IPSec VPN services.

Juniper SRX300 firewall

Data Networks engineers analyzed the current configurations and mapped existing functionality to the new Juniper SRX architecture. The new environment was designed to maintain the same operational capabilities while leveraging modern security gateway technology. Configuration activities included the migration of trust, untrust, and DMZ security zones, along with the associated security policies required to secure communications between internal resources, remote sites, and internet-facing services.

The firewall migration also included configuring stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall services, VPN connectivity, and perimeter security controls to ensure a seamless transition. Once configuration activities were completed, Data Networks validated, committed, and saved all settings before preparing the devices for delivery and deployment.

Building a Foundation for Future Network Security Growth

By successfully completing this firewall migration project, Data Networks helped the organization modernize its perimeter security infrastructure while minimizing operational disruption. The new Juniper SRX Services Gateways provided a supported and scalable platform capable of delivering the security services required to protect critical business operations.

With the new firewalls configured and ready for implementation, the organization gained a modernized security architecture designed to support future growth while maintaining the security controls and connectivity services that users rely on every day. The migration also reduced the risks associated with aging infrastructure and positioned the organization to take advantage of future Juniper security innovations.

Through detailed planning, expert configuration services, and proven network security expertise, Data Networks delivered a successful firewall migration engagement that strengthened security, improved infrastructure reliability, and created a scalable platform for the organization’s evolving business needs.
