Network Assessment for Non-Profit IT Modernization
Network Infrastructure, Security, Wireless, and Microsoft 365 Assessment Across Ten Locations
Creating a Strategic Roadmap for Technology Growth
This Maryland-based nonprofit organization sought to gain greater visibility into its technology environment as it continued expanding its educational, community, and outreach programs across multiple locations. With a headquarters facility and nine satellite sites supporting diverse operations, the nonprofit required a comprehensive understanding of its existing network, infrastructure, security posture, and technology lifecycle needs.
To support these objectives, Data Networks conducted a comprehensive enterprise network assessment designed to evaluate the current state of the nonprofit’s IT environment, identify areas for improvement, and develop a strategic roadmap for future technology investments.
The assessment provided a detailed review of network infrastructure, wireless performance, cybersecurity controls, Microsoft 365 licensing, Active Directory services, backup and disaster recovery processes, and overall technology readiness across ten locations.
Evaluating a Growing Multi-Site Technology Environment
As the nonprofit expanded its operations, technology systems that had evolved over time required a more structured evaluation to support future growth. Leadership needed a clear understanding of current capabilities, infrastructure limitations, security risks, and lifecycle considerations across headquarters and satellite locations.
The nonprofit also lacked centralized documentation detailing network topology, hardware inventories, connectivity requirements, and equipment lifecycle status. Without this visibility, it became increasingly difficult to plan future upgrades, prioritize investments, and align technology decisions with operational goals.
In addition, the nonprofit wanted to evaluate network performance, wireless coverage, security controls, Microsoft 365 licensing utilization, Active Directory configuration, and disaster recovery readiness to identify opportunities for optimization and risk reduction.
The goal was not only to assess the current environment but also to create a long-term technology roadmap that would guide future modernization initiatives and improve overall operational efficiency.
Conducting a Comprehensive Enterprise Network Assessment
Data Networks performed an extensive assessment covering the nonprofit’s headquarters and nine satellite locations. The engagement included physical inventories, network analysis, security reviews, wireless assessments, Microsoft 365 evaluations, and infrastructure documentation.
Key assessment activities included:
- Technology inventory across ten locations
- Hardware, software, and infrastructure lifecycle review
- Network topology mapping and documentation
- WAN, LAN, ISP, and wireless architecture evaluation
- Network security assessment and vulnerability scanning
- Firewall configuration review
- Wireless heat mapping and signal analysis at three locations
- Microsoft 365 license utilization review
- Active Directory and Azure environment assessment
- User permissions and access rights review
- Backup and disaster recovery evaluation
- ISP bandwidth and performance testing
- End-of-life and end-of-support analysis for infrastructure assets
- Cost analysis and budgeting recommendations
- Development of a prioritized technology improvement roadmap
Data Networks documented network devices, servers, workstations, wireless infrastructure, phone systems, security tools, and other critical technology assets across all sites. The assessment also included detailed analysis of hardware condition, utilization, support status, and future readiness.
As part of the wireless assessment, Data Networks conducted comprehensive wireless surveys at the nonprofit’s headquarters and two additional high-priority locations. These surveys included signal strength testing, wireless security reviews, coverage analysis, and heatmap generation to evaluate network performance and identify opportunities for wireless optimization.

The team also reviewed Microsoft 365 licensing utilization, Active Directory configuration, group policies, user permissions, and Azure administration practices to identify potential security, operational, and cost optimization opportunities.
Delivering Actionable Recommendations for Future Growth
Upon completion, the nonprofit received a comprehensive enterprise network assessment report that provided a detailed snapshot of its current technology environment and a prioritized action plan for future improvements.
The final deliverables included updated infrastructure documentation, network topology diagrams, security findings, wireless assessment results, lifecycle management recommendations, bandwidth utilization analysis, Microsoft 365 optimization opportunities, and cost estimates for recommended upgrades.

By evaluating infrastructure, security, wireless connectivity, identity services, backup processes, and operational workflows across all locations, Data Networks provided the nonprofit with the information needed to make informed technology decisions and confidently plan future modernization initiatives.
The resulting roadmap established a clear path toward improved performance, stronger security, enhanced reliability, and long-term scalability across the nonprofit’s entire IT environment.
