Security Assessment Remediation with Azure Sentinel and Microsoft 365 Security Tools for Local College

The Challenge: Reducing Cybersecurity Risk Across a Large Academic Environment

Following earlier phases of a comprehensive security assessment remediation initiative, this Maryland higher education institution needed to address several remaining cybersecurity risks impacting operational security, endpoint protection, and user awareness.

The institution’s IT environment included 167 Group Policy Objects (GPOs), creating administrative complexity and increasing the risk of policy conflicts and configuration errors. In addition, outdated antivirus definitions on portions of the environment left systems vulnerable to malware and emerging cyber threats.

The organization also lacked a centralized Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution, limiting real-time visibility into potential security incidents and slowing threat detection and response efforts. At the same time, phishing and social engineering risks remained a growing concern for the institution’s more than 20,000 Active Directory users.

To address these challenges, the institution partnered with Data Networks to deliver a comprehensive phishing awareness training and cybersecurity remediation engagement focused on security monitoring, endpoint protection, policy optimization, and user education.

The Solution: Security Assessment Remediation with Azure Sentinel and Microsoft 365

Data Networks delivered a multi-layered security assessment remediation solution designed to strengthen visibility, improve policy management, and expand organizational cybersecurity awareness.

The project began with a detailed review and optimization of the institution’s existing GPO structure. Data Networks engineers consolidated redundant policies, streamlined configurations, and disabled unnecessary settings to improve manageability and reduce administrative overhead. All policy changes were validated in a controlled test environment before production deployment to minimize operational disruption.

To strengthen endpoint security, Data Networks verified antivirus status across approximately 237 systems and implemented automated update schedules to ensure antivirus definitions remained current within 24 hours. Additional testing validated proper protection against known malware threats and endpoint vulnerabilities.

A key component of the project included deployment of Microsoft Azure Sentinel as a centralized SIEM platform. Data Networks configured Azure Sentinel to collect and monitor logs across approximately 10 network subnets, integrating the platform with Active Directory, domain controllers, and critical infrastructure systems.

The new SIEM environment provided improved real-time threat visibility, centralized monitoring, automated alerting, and enhanced incident response capabilities. Simulated threat scenarios were also performed to validate monitoring effectiveness and response workflows.

At the same time, Data Networks implemented a comprehensive phishing awareness training initiative leveraging Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Attack Simulation Training and the Microsoft Cybersecurity Awareness Kit. Security education campaigns were deployed to more than 20,000 Active Directory users, focusing on phishing prevention, password hygiene, and social engineering awareness.

The engagement also included specialized Microsoft 365 security administration training for 43 privileged administrators to improve awareness of brute-force attacks, privileged account risks, and advanced threat indicators.

The Result: Improved Threat Detection and Long-Term Security Readiness

This phishing awareness training and security assessment remediation initiative delivered long-term improvements to the institution’s cybersecurity posture, operational efficiency, and security visibility.

The deployment of Azure Sentinel established a centralized monitoring platform capable of improving threat detection, accelerating response times, and enhancing visibility across the institution’s infrastructure. Consolidated GPO management reduced policy complexity while improving administrative consistency and security governance.

The organization also gained an ongoing cybersecurity awareness framework powered by Microsoft 365 A5 tools, enabling continuous phishing simulations, recurring user education, and long-term reduction of social engineering risks.

To support future operations, Data Networks provided comprehensive documentation, SIEM deployment diagrams, audit guidance, training resources, and knowledge transfer sessions covering Microsoft Purview reporting, vulnerability management procedures, security monitoring workflows, and best practices for maintaining a secure environment.
