UPS Replacement Services & Power Infrastructure Modernization
APC Smart-UPS Deployment for Reliable Power Protection and Remote Management
Addressing Aging Power Infrastructure and Reliability Risks
This mid-sized commercial organization identified several challenges within its existing power protection environment, including aging uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, limited manageability, and declining reliability. Some existing UPS units no longer provided the level of backup protection required to support critical business systems, while at least one device had lost remote management functionality entirely.
Additionally, the organization sought to simplify power distribution by transitioning from legacy 208V power inputs to a more flexible 120V-based architecture that could leverage existing electrical infrastructure. The objective was to modernize the power protection environment, improve visibility into UPS performance, and ensure continued uptime for critical network and server systems.
Designing a Modern UPS Replacement Strategy
To address these challenges, Data Networks designed and implemented a comprehensive power infrastructure modernization project centered on APC Smart-UPS technology.
The solution included:
- Deployment of five APC Smart-UPS 2200VA systems
- Installation of six new power distribution units (PDUs)
- Migration from 208V power to 120V power infrastructure
- Data center UPS replacement
- Network closet UPS replacement
- Rack-level power distribution redesign
- Cloud-based UPS monitoring integration
- Power load balancing and validation
- Planned outage coordination and device migration
- Infrastructure testing and operational validation

Prior to implementation, Data Networks conducted detailed planning activities to identify affected systems, document existing power dependencies, and establish maintenance windows that minimized operational disruption. Existing device inventories and power connection requirements were reviewed to ensure a smooth transition to the new power architecture.
Implementing APC Smart-UPS Systems and Power Distribution Upgrades
During scheduled maintenance windows, Data Networks performed a controlled shutdown of connected systems and removed the legacy UPS infrastructure from both the data center and network closet environments.
The deployment included installing four APC Smart-UPS 2200VA systems within the data center and one within a separate network distribution closet. New rack-mounted PDUs were installed to support the updated power design and provide reliable connectivity between critical equipment and the new UPS systems.
As part of the modernization effort, Data Networks replaced legacy power connections with updated cabling designed to support the new PDU architecture. Existing servers, switches, and network infrastructure were reconnected to the new UPS-backed power environment, ensuring consistent protection across critical systems.
Following installation, the engineering team validated UPS startup procedures, confirmed power distribution functionality, and verified proper operation of all connected systems before returning the environment to production.
Enhancing Visibility Through Cloud-Based Power Management
In addition to improving power resiliency, the project introduced centralized cloud-based monitoring and management capabilities through Schneider Electric EcoStruxure.
Data Networks configured cloud management services for all deployed UPS systems, enabling administrators to:
- Monitor UPS health and status remotely
- Track real-time power utilization
- Receive proactive alerts and notifications
- View historical performance data
- Improve operational visibility across power infrastructure
- Simplify ongoing power management and troubleshooting
The addition of cloud-based monitoring transformed the UPS environment from a reactive infrastructure component into a proactive operational tool that provides greater insight into power conditions and system health.
Delivering a Reliable Foundation for Business Continuity
Upon completion, the organization successfully replaced aging UPS infrastructure with a modern, fully manageable APC Smart-UPS environment designed to support long-term operational requirements.
The new solution improved power resiliency, enhanced visibility into critical infrastructure, and eliminated reliability concerns associated with aging UPS systems. By transitioning to a standardized 120V architecture, the organization also gained greater flexibility for future growth while simplifying power management and maintenance.
Through careful planning, coordinated implementation, and integration with cloud-based monitoring tools, Data Networks delivered a modern power protection solution that strengthens business continuity, reduces infrastructure risk, and provides a scalable foundation for future operations.
