Veeam Backup Solution & Data Protection Modernization
Dell PowerEdge Deployment with VMware vSphere and Backup Repository Migration for Improved Security and Recoverability for Local Health Department
This Maryland-based health department faced increasing risks to its data protection strategy due to an aging and unsupported backup infrastructure. The existing backup-to-disk appliance had reached end-of-support, and administrative access limitations further complicated management and recoverability. These challenges created potential exposure to data loss, security vulnerabilities, and extended downtime in the event of system failure. To address these concerns, the health department required a modern Veeam backup solution that would improve reliability, enhance data security, and streamline administration.
To meet these objectives, the health department partnered with Data Networks to execute a comprehensive Veeam backup solution and data protection modernization project, replacing legacy backup systems with a flexible, scalable, and fully supported solution. The new architecture was designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing VMware environment while enabling improved backup performance and future scalability, including options for immutable storage.
Data Networks initiated the project by deploying a new Dell PowerEdge R750 server within the health department’s primary data center. This system was configured as a VMware vSphere Standard host and integrated into the existing VMware vCenter environment for centralized management. Local storage on the R750, consisting of high-capacity drives, was configured as a dedicated datastore to support backup operations and provide a reliable repository for protected data.
As part of the Veeam Backup and Replication deployment, Data Networks migrated the existing Veeam virtual machine to the new infrastructure. The engineering team reconfigured the environment to utilize the R750’s local storage as the primary backup repository, ensuring improved accessibility and performance. All existing backup jobs were carefully recreated and optimized to align with the new storage architecture, maintaining continuity of protection while enhancing operational efficiency.
To further strengthen data resiliency, Data Networks redeployed an existing Dell PowerEdge R740xd server as a secondary “lifeboat” system at a separate facility. This system was configured as a standalone VMware host and integrated into the environment to support replication and backup copy jobs. This approach provided an additional layer of protection, enabling offsite recovery capabilities and improved disaster recovery readiness.
Comprehensive testing and validation were conducted to ensure the effectiveness of the new solution. This included verification of backup job success, workload recovery processes, and replication functionality between primary and secondary systems. Data Networks ensured that all components of the solution were operating as intended and meeting the health department’s recovery objectives.
The engagement concluded with the decommissioning of legacy backup systems, eliminating unsupported technologies and reducing security risk. Data Networks also provided knowledge transfer sessions, guiding IT staff through the new management interfaces and operational workflows.
As a result, the health department now benefits from a modern, secure, and highly reliable Veeam backup and data protection infrastructure, delivering improved recoverability, enhanced performance, and a scalable foundation for future data security initiatives.
