Dell PowerVault and PowerProtect Infrastructure for Immutable Backup and Disaster Recovery Readiness

The Challenge: Replacing Legacy Backup Infrastructure and Improving Cyber Resilience

This Maryland K-12 school district needed to modernize its data protection and disaster recovery foundation after its legacy backup platform reached end-of-support. The existing environment lacked the immutable storage, recovery verification, centralized reporting, and future hypervisor flexibility needed to support the district’s large-scale instructional and administrative operations.

With 180 virtual workloads spanning a primary datacenter and disaster recovery site, the district required a resilient backup architecture capable of supporting rapid recovery, offsite protection, ransomware resilience, and future infrastructure changes, including a planned transition from VMware to Nutanix AHV.

To support this broader modernization effort, the district selected the Veeam Data Platform – Advanced Edition as its strategic data protection solution. Data Networks was engaged to deploy and register the physical backup hardware infrastructure needed to support the district’s Veeam-based architecture.

The Solution: Veeam Data Platform Hardware Deployment with Dell Storage Infrastructure

Data Networks delivered a focused Veeam Data Platform hardware deployment to establish the foundational storage infrastructure supporting the school district’s modern backup and disaster recovery strategy.

At the HQ Datacenter, Data Networks physically deployed one Dell PowerVault ME5224 all-flash storage array to serve as the high-performance backup landing zone for short-term backup storage and rapid recovery workflows. This performance tier was designed to support fast backup ingest and operational restores within the district’s virtual infrastructure.

Data Networks also deployed one Dell PowerProtect DD6410 appliance at the HQ Datacenter to provide on-premises immutable backup storage using Dell Retention Lock capabilities. This platform supports district’s ransomware resilience strategy by helping protect backup data from modification or deletion during defined retention periods.

At the Disaster Recovery site, Data Networks installed a second Dell PowerProtect DD6410 appliance to provide an independent offsite backup copy location. This system supports the district’s disaster recovery and business continuity goals by enabling geographic separation of protected backup data.

Across both sites, Data Networks completed unboxing, inspection, rack-and-stack installation, power and interface connectivity, initial power-on validation, asset capture, vendor registration, and support entitlement verification for the deployed hardware platforms.

The engagement also included documentation handoff, asset inventory reporting, hardware deployment summaries, and project closeout activities to confirm that the district had the infrastructure foundation required to proceed with its Veeam software configuration and operational rollout.

The Result: A Scalable Foundation for Immutable Backup and Disaster Recovery

Through this Veeam Data Platform hardware deployment, the district gained the physical infrastructure foundation needed to support a modern, multi-tier data protection architecture.

The combination of Dell PowerVault performance storage, Dell PowerProtect immutable capacity storage, and offsite disaster recovery hardware provides the district with a scalable platform for improving backup performance, strengthening ransomware resilience, and supporting long-term recoverability objectives.

The deployed infrastructure also preserves flexibility for the district’s future transition from VMware to Nutanix AHV, allowing the district to continue evolving its data protection strategy without reworking the underlying hardware foundation.

With the hardware installed, initialized, registered, and documented, the district is positioned to continue implementation of Veeam Data Platform capabilities, including centralized monitoring, recovery validation, replication, and cloud-based immutable retention through Veeam Data Cloud Vault.
