Active Directory Upgrade & Hyper-V Server Deployment

New Virtualized Infrastructure and Domain Controller Implementation for Maryland Non-Profit Organization

Q1 2023

This Maryland-based non-profit religious organization was operating all mission-critical workloads on a single Hyper-V host, creating significant risk to business continuity, security, and overall system reliability. Many of the services running within this environment were legacy or no longer supported, increasing the likelihood of downtime and complicating recovery efforts. To address these challenges, the organization partnered with Data Networks to execute a comprehensive Hyper-V server deployment and Active Directory upgrade initiative designed to improve resiliency, performance, and long-term supportability.

Data Networks began the project by staging and configuring a new enterprise-grade server to serve as a dedicated Hyper-V host. Following initial quality assurance and base configuration, the new server was deployed within a geographically separate location on the customer’s campus to enhance redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities. The server was fully integrated into the organization’s existing network, with configurations in place for both standard LAN connectivity and secure out-of-band management to support ongoing administration.

As part of the new server deployment, Data Networks implemented a new virtual machine configured as an Active Directory Domain Controller. This additional domain controller was joined to the existing environment to eliminate reliance on a single host and to strengthen overall identity infrastructure. The team then upgraded the Active Directory Domain Services functional level to support Distributed File System (DFS) replication, replacing the deprecated File Replication Service (FRS). This modernization step ensured improved data consistency, reliability, and compliance with current Microsoft standards.

To further enhance system resilience, Data Networks redistributed Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles across multiple domain controllers hosted on separate Hyper-V environments. This strategic distribution minimized the risk of a single point of failure and significantly improved the organization’s ability to recover quickly from potential outages.

Additionally, the new physical host and associated virtual machines were integrated into the organization’s existing data protection framework, ensuring comprehensive backup and recovery coverage. Data Networks completed extensive testing and validation to confirm the stability and performance of the new environment.

The engagement concluded with detailed documentation, knowledge transfer sessions, and administrative guidance to empower the organization’s IT stakeholders. As a result, the nonprofit now benefits from a modernized, highly available infrastructure with improved security, reduced risk, and a scalable foundation for future growth through this Hyper-V server deployment and Active Directory upgrade.
