Fiber Optic Network Services for Campus Backbone Modernization
Fiber Testing, Single-Mode Recabling, and 10GE Connectivity for Higher Education Residences
The Challenge: Legacy Fiber Infrastructure Limiting Network Performance
This Maryland-based college needed to modernize its campus network infrastructure to support increasing bandwidth demands across student residences, academic buildings, and administrative facilities. The college’s existing fiber backbone relied heavily on aging multi-mode fiber connections operating at 1 Gigabit Ethernet (1GE), which could no longer support growing user density, connected devices, and modern application requirements.
Several residence halls and campus buildings were constrained by outdated uplinks that exceeded the practical distance limitations for higher-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) connectivity over multi-mode fiber. Before upgrading the environment, the institution first needed comprehensive visibility into the condition, type, and performance of the existing fiber infrastructure connecting campus buildings to the core network backbone.
To address these challenges, the college required scalable fiber optic network services that would both assess the current environment and implement a future-ready single-mode fiber infrastructure capable of supporting 10GE connectivity and beyond.
The Solution: Comprehensive Fiber Optic Network Services and 10GE Migration
Data Networks, with its subcontractor Rightway Cable Solutions LLC, delivered a multi-phase engagement focused on providing end-to-end fiber optic network services for the college’s campus backbone infrastructure. Working alongside cabling specialists and the institution’s IT team, Data Networks completed both a comprehensive fiber assessment and a large-scale single-mode recabling initiative.
Phase 1: Fiber Backbone Assessment and Testing
The first phase of the project focused on evaluating the campus fiber backbone across 43 campus buildings, including dormitories, academic facilities, and administrative offices.
Data Networks engineers performed extensive fiber testing from MDF locations throughout campus, including:
- Power meter testing
- Continuity testing
- Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) testing
- Visual Fault Locator (VFL) testing
The team documented fiber strand counts, fiber types, connector types, and cable lengths while identifying any faults, inconsistencies, or remediation requirements.
The college received:
- Detailed fiber strand spreadsheets by building
- Campus fiber mapping documentation
- Comprehensive testing reports
- Recommendations for remediation and future backbone upgrades
Phase 2: Single-Mode Fiber Deployment and 10GE Upgrade
Following the assessment, Data Networks implemented the second phase of the fiber optic network services project by replacing outdated multi-mode cabling with new single-mode fiber infrastructure designed to support higher-speed uplinks.
The deployment included:
- Sixteen (16) new single-mode fiber runs
- Installation of 12-strand single-mode fiber cables to residence facilities
- New fiber patch panels, terminations, and patch cables
The upgraded fiber infrastructure connected:
- Science lecture hall to 8 dormitory buildings
- Primary lecture hall to 6 township buildings
- Primary lecture hall to 2 green residence buildings
Data Networks also worked closely with the college IT team to migrate uplinks from legacy 1GE multi-mode connections to new 10GE single-mode fiber connections. This included replacing existing SFP optics with 10GE SFP+ modules, reconfiguring switch uplink ports, and validating network connectivity throughout the environment.
The Outcome: Future-Ready Campus Connectivity and Scalable Network Infrastructure
Through these comprehensive fiber optic network services, the college now benefits from a significantly more scalable and resilient campus backbone infrastructure. The combination of detailed fiber testing, infrastructure assessment, and strategic single-mode recabling provided the institution with the visibility and performance necessary to support modern academic and residential networking demands.
The installation of 16 new single-mode fiber optic cable runs and migration to 10GE uplinks dramatically increased bandwidth availability and improved connectivity across residence halls and campus facilities. In addition, the new single-mode fiber infrastructure positions the institution to support future high-speed networking initiatives, including 40GE and 100GE technologies.
By modernizing the campus backbone through advanced fiber optic testing, documentation, and recabling, Data Networks delivered a long-term infrastructure solution that improves network reliability, supports future growth, and enhances the student and staff technology experience across campus.
