Immutable Backup Storage Deployment for Ransomware Protection & Recovery

Modernized Veeam Backup Infrastructure with Immutable Storage, AWS S3 Archival, and Advanced Data Recovery

Q3 2023

The Challenge: Strengthening Backup Security Against Ransomware and Data Loss

This university facilities department’s existing backup infrastructure was nearing end-of-support status, creating operational risk and limiting the effectiveness of its disaster recovery and cybersecurity strategy. Existing backup hardware lacked modern resiliency features and did not provide sufficient protection against ransomware, malicious encryption, or evolving data security threats.

The department also needed stronger safeguards to ensure backup data integrity and recoverability in the event of malware attacks or infrastructure failures. Existing systems did not leverage immutable storage protections, advanced monitoring, or automated verification technologies available within the Veeam platform.

Key concerns included:

  • Protecting backup data from ransomware encryption
  • Improving workload recoverability during outages or malware events
  • Implementing immutable backup repositories
  • Enhancing backup verification and testing capabilities
  • Improving visibility into backup infrastructure health
  • Extending long-term backup retention through cloud archival storage

To address these challenges, the department required a comprehensive immutable backup storage solution capable of modernizing backup infrastructure while improving security, resiliency, and operational efficiency.

The Solution: Immutable Backup Storage with Veeam, VMware, and AWS S3 Integration

Data Networks delivered a fully modernized immutable backup storage solution designed to strengthen ransomware protection, improve backup integrity, and enhance disaster recovery capabilities.

The deployment included:

  • One (1) Dell PowerEdge R760 server
  • VMware vSphere 8.0 Standard host deployment
  • New Veeam Backup & Replication virtual machine
  • New Veeam ONE monitoring and analytics deployment
  • Linux-based immutable backup repository
  • Amazon S3 cloud archival integration

Data Networks deployed the Dell PowerEdge R760 server within the department’s Maryland data center and integrated the new VMware vSphere host into the existing VMware vCenter environment. All local server storage was configured as a VMware storage resource to support Veeam backup operations and repository functionality.

The engineering team then deployed a Windows Server 2022 virtual machine hosting Veeam Backup & Replication and recreated existing backup jobs and protection policies for:

  • 101 protected workloads
  • Two-week backup retention
  • Local backup landing-zone repositories
  • Enhanced recovery and validation workflows

Central to the deployment was the implementation of an immutable backup storage repository using a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server virtual machine. This immutable repository was configured to prevent backup modification or deletion during the defined retention period, significantly improving protection against ransomware and malicious encryption attempts.

To further strengthen backup resiliency and recovery confidence, Data Networks configured:

  • Veeam SureBackup
  • Instant Recovery
  • Virtual Labs
  • Sandbox-on-Demand
  • Secure Restore with anti-malware scanning integration

The deployment also included Veeam ONE analytics and monitoring tools configured to detect suspicious encryption activity and trigger automated email alerts related to potential ransomware behavior.

To support long-term retention and scalable archival storage, Data Networks integrated Amazon S3 cloud storage into the Veeam scale-out backup repository architecture as a remote capacity tier.

The Outcome: Modernized Data Protection with Secure Immutable Backup Storage

Through this immutable backup storage deployment, the facilities department significantly improved the resiliency, security, and recoverability of its backup infrastructure.

The new environment provides advanced protection against ransomware and malicious encryption while ensuring backup data remains secure and recoverable through immutable storage policies and verified recovery testing.

By leveraging Veeam SureBackup, Virtual Labs, and Secure Restore capabilities, the department gained greater confidence in the integrity and usability of protected workloads. The deployment of Veeam ONE monitoring and ransomware alerting also improved operational visibility and proactive threat detection capabilities.

Integration with Amazon S3 archival storage further enhanced scalability and long-term retention efficiency while reducing operational complexity.

The department now benefits from a modernized, secure, and highly resilient backup environment built around immutable backup storage principles and designed to support evolving cybersecurity and disaster recovery requirements.
