Network Redundancy Upgrade for Business Continuity & Security

Building a Highly Available Juniper Network Architecture for a Maryland Marketing Agency

Q2 2024

Eliminating Single Points of Failure in an Aging Network Environment

This Maryland-based marketing and advertising agency faced growing challenges with an aging network infrastructure that relied on legacy Barracuda link balancers, HP switches, and standalone firewall appliances. As these systems approached end-of-life status, the agency experienced increasing risks related to hardware failures, downtime, security vulnerabilities, and operational complexity.

The existing architecture required separate devices for internet link balancing, switching, and firewall services, creating management challenges and increasing the likelihood of service disruptions. More importantly, the environment lacked sufficient network redundancy, leaving critical business operations vulnerable to outages caused by device failures or connectivity issues.

To support future growth and improve operational resiliency, the agency needed a modern infrastructure capable of delivering high availability, stronger security, simplified management, and improved scalability. The solution also needed to consolidate multiple network functions while reducing administrative overhead and ongoing operational costs.

To meet these requirements, the agency partnered with Data Networks to design and implement a comprehensive network redundancy solution built on Juniper Networks technology.

Network Redundancy Improves Reliability and High Availability

The cornerstone of the project was a highly available architecture designed around two Juniper SRX340 firewalls and two Juniper EX4100 12-port switches. This new design replaced multiple aging devices and introduced the network redundancy necessary to maintain business operations even in the event of hardware or connectivity failures.

The engagement began with a detailed discovery process that included network mapping, configuration analysis, VLAN review, network segmentation evaluation, and assessment of internet connectivity and VPN services. Using this information, Data Networks developed a comprehensive network design that leveraged the agency’s existing IP addressing and VLAN structure while introducing enhanced redundancy and security controls.

Data Networks configured and deployed the Juniper Mist cloud management platform to provide centralized visibility and administration of the switching infrastructure. The two Juniper EX4100 switches were provisioned using Juniper’s Zero Touch Provisioning capabilities, streamlining deployment and simplifying future management.

At the network edge, the two Juniper SRX340 firewalls were configured to provide redundant security services, dual-ISP load balancing, secure remote access VPN connectivity, and advanced content security protections. Security policies, web filtering, content inspection, and access controls were managed through Juniper Security Director Cloud, providing centralized security administration and monitoring.

Delivering a Scalable Foundation for Future Growth

Following staging and configuration, Data Networks performed onsite installation of the new infrastructure, including deployment of both Juniper SRX340 firewalls and both Juniper EX4100 switches. Legacy Barracuda, HP, and firewall appliances were removed, and the new architecture was integrated into the existing environment with minimal disruption.

The enhanced network redundancy design provides automatic failover capabilities that help maintain connectivity during equipment failures, reducing the risk of downtime and improving business continuity. Dual internet service provider load balancing further strengthens resiliency while optimizing bandwidth utilization across available connections.

In addition to improving reliability, the consolidated architecture simplifies management by combining switching, firewall, VPN, and internet edge services into a unified Juniper platform. This approach reduces operational complexity, strengthens the agency’s security posture, and creates a scalable foundation capable of supporting future technology initiatives and business growth.

The completed network redundancy project delivered a modern, resilient infrastructure built around two Juniper SRX340 firewalls and two Juniper EX4100 switches, providing integrated security, switching, remote access, and connectivity services. Through strategic planning, cloud-managed networking, and a highly available design, Data Networks helped the agency improve uptime, strengthen cybersecurity, simplify administration, and establish a future-ready network architecture.
