Secure Remote Access Deployment with Microsoft Entra ID

Enhancing Remote Workforce Security with Conditional Access and Azure VPN

Q2 2024

Strengthening Security for Remote Employees

This Maryland commercial roofing company needed to improve the security and accessibility of its remote workforce. As more employees required access to business resources outside the office, the organization sought a solution that would provide secure connectivity while maintaining a seamless user experience. Existing remote access methods lacked the advanced security controls necessary to protect sensitive company data and did not provide a consistent framework for managing remote users.

The company wanted to enable secure remote access for five employees while leveraging existing Microsoft licensing investments. In addition to improving connectivity, the organization needed stronger authentication controls, standardized access policies, enhanced monitoring capabilities, and greater visibility into remote access activity. The solution also needed to support future growth while minimizing deployment complexity and operational costs.

To address these requirements, the company partnered with Data Networks to implement a comprehensive secure remote access solution utilizing Microsoft Entra ID Premium P1 capabilities and Azure point-to-site VPN technology.

Secure Remote Access Improves Security and User Experience

At the core of the project was the deployment of a secure remote access architecture designed to provide encrypted connectivity between remote users and Azure-hosted resources. Data Networks configured an Azure VPN Gateway to support point-to-site (P2S) VPN connections and deployed the Azure VPN Client to five users, enabling secure access from virtually any location.

secure remote access solution design

To strengthen identity security, Data Networks implemented multiple Conditional Access policies within Microsoft Entra ID. These policies were specifically designed to reduce the risk of unauthorized access while maintaining a simple and consistent experience for end users.

The deployment included a policy requiring multifactor authentication (MFA) for VPN access, ensuring that users must provide an additional verification factor before connecting to company resources. Data Networks also configured geographic access restrictions to block authentication attempts originating from high-risk locations where the organization does not conduct business.

Additional security enhancements included policies that required the use of approved client applications for VPN access and blocked legacy authentication methods that do not support modern security protections. Together, these controls created a layered security model that reduced exposure to credential-based attacks while improving visibility into user access activity.

Delivering a Scalable Framework for Remote Work Security

Following implementation, Data Networks conducted testing and validation to confirm that all five users could successfully establish secure VPN connections and access required resources. The team verified Conditional Access functionality, MFA enforcement, Azure VPN Client connectivity, and overall user experience to ensure the solution met both security and operational objectives.

Beyond improving security, the new secure remote access solution delivered a more consistent and user-friendly experience for remote employees. Users benefited from seamless authentication workflows, reliable connectivity, and standardized access controls regardless of their location.

The project also enhanced the organization’s compliance and monitoring capabilities through centralized logging, Conditional Access reporting, and visibility into authentication activity. These improvements provide valuable auditing information and help support future security initiatives as the company continues to expand its remote workforce.

The completed secure remote access deployment established a secure and scalable foundation for remote connectivity by combining Microsoft Entra ID Premium P1 capabilities, Conditional Access policies, multifactor authentication, and Azure point-to-site VPN technology. Through strategic planning, rapid implementation, and ongoing managed services support, Data Networks helped the organization improve remote workforce productivity while significantly strengthening its security posture.
