Dell PowerProtect Deployment for City Backup Infrastructure Modernization

Integrating Dell PowerProtect Data Domain with Veeam Backup & Replication for Improved Data Protection

Q3 2025

The Challenge: Modernizing Backup Infrastructure Without Disrupting Operations

This Maryland city government needed to modernize its backup and recovery infrastructure by replacing aging backup hardware with a more scalable, high-performance data protection platform capable of supporting long-term retention and recovery objectives. The city’s IT team required a solution that could integrate seamlessly with its existing Veeam Backup & Replication environment while minimizing operational disruption during deployment and migration activities.

Key challenges included coordinating installation logistics, validating network and power readiness, integrating new hardware into existing backup workflows, and ensuring backup continuity during cutover activities. The city also needed to properly configure deduplication, replication, and capacity tiering to maximize storage efficiency and backup performance.

In addition, the city wanted to ensure backup and restore operations were fully validated prior to production handoff and required comprehensive documentation and knowledge transfer to support ongoing management by internal IT staff.

To address these requirements, the city partnered with Data Networks to execute a comprehensive Dell PowerProtect deployment project centered around a new Dell PowerProtect DD6410 appliance integrated with Veeam Backup & Replication.

The Solution: Dell PowerProtect Deployment with Veeam Integration

Data Networks designed and implemented a modern Dell PowerProtect deployment solution to strengthen the city’s backup infrastructure and improve overall data protection resiliency.

Dell PowerProtect disaster recovery solution design

The project included deployment and configuration of one Dell PowerProtect DD6410 appliance at the city’s primary data center. Data Networks coordinated project kickoff activities with city IT stakeholders to validate rack space, power availability, VLAN configurations, DNS requirements, IP addressing, and system access prior to installation.

Dell PowerProtect DD6410 appliance

Following validation and planning activities, the engineering team completed full rack-and-stack deployment services for the DD6410 appliance, including cabling, backup network integration, and system readiness verification. Power-on self-tests and connectivity validation were performed to confirm operational status before configuration activities began.

Data Networks then configured the DD6410 platform, including hostname assignments, network configuration, DNS, NTP, and security settings. The appliance was integrated directly into the city’s existing Veeam Backup & Replication environment using DD Boost technology to improve backup throughput, optimize deduplication performance, and streamline backup operations.

The deployment also included configuration of deduplication policies, capacity tiering settings, and replication workflows aligned with the city’s backup retention and disaster recovery objectives. WAN connectivity, firewall requirements, and replication scheduling were validated to support efficient inter-site replication between the primary and disaster recovery environments.

Once configuration activities were completed, Data Networks performed comprehensive testing and validation procedures, including end-to-end Veeam backup and restore testing, throughput validation, and deduplication efficiency analysis. These tests ensured the new environment was fully operational and capable of meeting the city’s recovery objectives before final production handoff.

Continued Value: Enhanced Backup Performance and Long-Term Data Protection

Through this Dell PowerProtect deployment, the city successfully modernized its backup infrastructure with a scalable and high-performance data protection platform designed to support future growth and evolving recovery requirements.

The new Dell PowerProtect DD6410 environment delivers improved backup efficiency, enhanced deduplication capabilities, streamlined Veeam integration, and more reliable disaster recovery replication workflows. By leveraging DD Boost and optimized storage configurations, the city now benefits from faster backups, improved storage utilization, and simplified backup administration.

Data Networks also delivered detailed as-built documentation and conducted knowledge transfer sessions covering system monitoring, management procedures, and operational best practices. As a result, the city’s IT staff is now equipped to confidently manage and maintain the upgraded backup environment moving forward.
