Firewall Deployment for K-12 Network Security Modernization

Juniper SRX340 Implementation to Reduce Costs and Simplify Security Operations

Q4 2024

Modernizing Network Security While Reducing Operational Expenses

This Maryland private high school was seeking a more cost-effective approach to maintaining its network security infrastructure. The school’s existing environment relied on two Juniper SRX550 firewalls operating in a High Availability (HA) configuration, resulting in significant annual support and subscription costs. As the SRX550 platform approached its end-of-support lifecycle, the school needed a replacement solution that would maintain strong security protections while reducing ongoing operational expenses.

The school also wanted to simplify administration by moving away from a dual-firewall architecture. While current bandwidth requirements remained stable at approximately 1 Gbps, the school wanted the flexibility to accommodate future growth without making a substantial investment in an oversized firewall platform.

To meet these objectives, the school partnered with Data Networks to execute a strategic firewall deployment project designed to modernize network security, reduce recurring costs, and improve long-term operational efficiency.

Executing a Secure and Scalable Firewall Deployment

Data Networks began the engagement with a comprehensive assessment of the existing firewall environment, including security policies, routing configurations, network requirements, and operational dependencies. Based on this analysis, the team developed a migration strategy that would allow the school to transition from its aging dual-firewall architecture to a streamlined single-firewall deployment.

The core of the firewall deployment involved implementing a Juniper SRX340 next-generation firewall to replace the existing SRX550 devices. The SRX340 platform was selected because it delivers the performance, security capabilities, and scalability needed to support the school’s current network demands while providing room for future bandwidth growth.

Prior to installation, Data Networks staged the firewall in a controlled environment and imported the existing configuration. Security policies were reviewed, validated, and optimized to ensure compatibility with the new platform. The deployment also included the configuration of advanced security services such as Juniper Sky Advanced Threat Prevention (SkyATP), Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), and AppSecure technologies.

Comprehensive testing was performed throughout the staging process to verify policy functionality, threat prevention capabilities, throughput performance, and overall system health before the device was introduced into the production environment.

Simplifying Management While Strengthening Security

Following staging and validation, Data Networks coordinated an installation window to minimize disruption to school operations. The new firewall was installed, integrated into the network, and thoroughly tested to verify connectivity, security functionality, and application performance.

engineers completing firewall deployment

A key benefit of the completed firewall deployment is the simplification of the school’s security architecture. By transitioning from a dual-firewall High Availability environment to a single modern firewall platform supported by same-day hardware replacement services, the school significantly reduced licensing, support, and management costs while maintaining reliable network protection.

The addition of SkyATP provides advanced threat detection and real-time malware analysis, helping protect students, faculty, staff, and school resources from emerging cybersecurity threats. The new platform also provides a scalable foundation capable of supporting future growth without requiring a major infrastructure investment.

Following deployment, Data Networks delivered detailed testing results, updated configuration documentation, and operational guidance to support ongoing administration. The firewall continues to be supported through the school’s existing Data Networks Managed IT Services agreement, ensuring proactive monitoring, maintenance, and technical support.

The completed firewall deployment project delivered a secure, cost-effective, and highly manageable network security solution that reduces operational overhead while improving the school’s overall cybersecurity posture.
