Replacing Unsupported Infrastructure with Modern Hyper-V Virtualization

This Maryland-based media and communications organization needed to modernize an aging IT environment that had reached the end of its supported lifecycle. The existing infrastructure relied on unsupported VMware hypervisors, aging physical servers, legacy Windows Server operating systems, and multiple single points of failure that created significant operational and business continuity risks.

Critical workloads lacked redundancy, backup data was not replicated offsite, and Microsoft 365 services had no dedicated backup protection. To improve resiliency while controlling costs, the organization partnered with Data Networks to implement a comprehensive Hyper-V virtualization solution that would modernize infrastructure, strengthen data protection, and establish a sustainable platform for future growth.

Modernizing Legacy Systems and Eliminating Operational Risk

The organization’s environment consisted of Windows Server 2008-era workloads running on aging infrastructure that had exceeded vendor support lifecycles. The legacy virtualization platform and physical servers increased exposure to security vulnerabilities, hardware failures, and prolonged recovery times.

Several business-critical systems represented single points of failure, including core infrastructure services, backup repositories, and virtualization hosts. Additionally, the organization maintained legacy server infrastructure at a remote office location that no longer aligned with operational or budgetary objectives.

The organization required a solution capable of consolidating workloads, reducing infrastructure complexity, eliminating unsupported technologies, and providing reliable backup and disaster recovery capabilities without introducing significant new costs.

Deploying a Modern Hyper-V Virtualization Platform

Data Networks designed and deployed a new Microsoft-based infrastructure centered on Hyper-V virtualization and Windows Server 2022.

The project included:

  • Deployment of three Dell PowerEdge servers
  • Installation and configuration of Microsoft Hyper-V 2022
  • Migration of legacy VMware virtual machines to Hyper-V
  • Deployment of two new Windows Server 2022 domain controllers
  • Active Directory modernization and domain functional level upgrades

Two Dell PowerEdge R450 servers were deployed to host production virtual machines, while a Dell PowerEdge R550 server was dedicated to backup services and storage repositories. The new Hyper-V virtualization environment provided improved performance, enhanced supportability, and a scalable foundation for future workloads.

Data Networks migrated existing VMware workloads— including database, application, accounting, and terminal services systems— to Hyper-V while simultaneously deploying new Windows Server 2022 domain controllers and modernizing Active Directory services. The project also included migrating file services from a legacy NAS appliance to a new Windows Server 2022 file server hosted within the virtual environment.

Enhancing Data Protection with Veeam and Azure Cloud Storage

As part of the infrastructure modernization effort, Data Networks implemented a comprehensive backup and disaster recovery strategy designed to protect both on-premises and cloud-based data.

The solution included:

  • Veeam Backup & Replication for production workloads
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
  • Local backup repositories hosted on dedicated infrastructure
  • Azure Blob Storage integration
  • Automated cloud replication
  • Scale-Out Backup Repository configuration
  • Cloud tiering and retention management
  • Backup scheduling and monitoring
  • Backup and restore validation testing

All production virtual machines were protected through Veeam Backup & Replication, while Microsoft 365 data for seventeen users was secured through Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. Backup data was replicated to Azure Blob Storage, providing geographically diverse protection and reducing reliance on physical infrastructure at remote locations.

This hybrid backup architecture improved recoverability, strengthened business continuity capabilities, and created a cost-effective disaster recovery strategy.

Building a Scalable Hyper-V Virtualization Environment

Upon completion, the organization successfully transitioned from unsupported infrastructure to a modern Hyper-V virtualization platform running Windows Server 2022.

The new environment eliminated legacy VMware dependencies, reduced operational complexity, and provided a secure, supported foundation for future growth. Modernized Active Directory services, updated file systems, and improved backup capabilities strengthened security while reducing administrative overhead. By combining Hyper-V virtualization, Veeam Backup & Replication, Microsoft 365 backup protection, and Azure cloud storage, Data Networks delivered a resilient infrastructure platform designed to support long-term operational requirements while improving recoverability, scalability, and overall IT efficiency.
