Juniper SRX Firewall Migration and Security Consolidation for College Networks
Replacing Complex Firewall Architecture to Support Next-Generation Connectivity
This Maryland College recently upgraded its internet services to support significantly higher bandwidth requirements and future growth initiatives. While the institution’s new service provider infrastructure was capable of delivering up to 10Gbps connectivity, the college’s perimeter security architecture remained unnecessarily complex and difficult to manage.
The environment relied on two separate security platforms to provide internet access, routing, and perimeter protection. Fortinet firewalls handled internet security services while a separate pair of Juniper Networks SRX Services Gateways provided routing and limited internal security functionality. This dual-platform approach increased administrative overhead, duplicated functionality, and complicated ongoing management.
To simplify operations and fully leverage its existing Juniper investment, the college partnered with Data Networks to perform a Juniper SRX Firewall Migration that would consolidate routing, internet connectivity, and perimeter security services onto a single, high-performance security platform capable of supporting the institution’s upgraded network infrastructure.
Designing a Comprehensive Juniper SRX Firewall Migration Strategy
Data Networks began the project by conducting a detailed review of the existing Fortinet environment. Engineers analyzed firewall policies, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing configurations, intrusion prevention settings, antivirus services, application controls, URL filtering policies, DNS filtering, SSL inspection, and web application security protections.
Using this information, Data Networks developed a comprehensive migration plan that mapped all internet-facing connections, routing requirements, security services, and cabling dependencies. The design also included recommendations for integrating the security platform into the institution’s existing Juniper ecosystem while preparing the environment for long-term growth.
As part of the Juniper SRX Firewall Migration, Data Networks upgraded licensing and subscriptions on the existing SRX appliances to enable advanced security and management capabilities, including:
- Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)
- Juniper AppSecure
- URL Filtering
- Cloud Antivirus and Anti-Spyware
- Sky Advanced Threat Prevention (Sky ATP)
- Security Intelligence Services
- WAN Assurance
- Virtual Network Assistant (VNA)
The project also included onboarding the SRX environment into the Juniper Mist Portal, providing centralized visibility, monitoring, analytics, and management for both networking and security operations.
Delivering a Unified Security Platform with Simplified Management
After completing configuration and testing activities, Data Networks executed the production migration during a scheduled maintenance window. Internet connections, routing services, and perimeter security functions were successfully transitioned from the Fortinet firewalls to the Juniper SRX cluster, including all required security policies, routing configurations, and WAN services.

Following the cutover, Data Networks worked closely with college IT staff to validate internet access, application functionality, threat prevention services, routing performance, and Juniper Mist Portal integration. Comprehensive testing confirmed that security controls were functioning as designed and that users could access critical applications without disruption.
The completed Juniper SRX Firewall Migration eliminated the need for a separate firewall platform while simplifying network operations and reducing architectural complexity. By consolidating routing and perimeter security services onto a single Juniper platform, the college gained a more efficient and scalable security architecture capable of supporting its 10Gbps connectivity goals.
Today, the institution benefits from enhanced visibility, streamlined management, advanced threat protection capabilities, and a modernized security foundation that supports future network expansion while reducing operational overhead.
