Replacing Aging Systems to Strengthen Virtualization Infrastructure

This local government agency was facing increasing challenges with an aging IT environment that no longer aligned with its operational requirements. Existing servers were approaching end of support, VMware licensing required renewal, and the agency’s VMware vCenter platform was experiencing functionality issues that hindered centralized management. Additionally, the organization lacked key virtualization capabilities such as High Availability (HA) and Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), limiting resiliency and workload optimization.

The agency also faced inefficiencies in resource utilization, with low CPU and memory consumption across the environment but storage limitations on individual hosts. Combined with strict budget constraints and a compressed implementation timeline tied to fiscal year funding deadlines, the organization needed a cost-effective approach to modernize its virtualization infrastructure without disrupting daily operations.

To achieve these goals, the agency partnered with Data Networks to replace aging hardware, refresh VMware licensing, deploy a new VMware vCenter environment, and optimize the overall virtualization architecture for improved performance and long-term scalability.

Modernizing Virtualization Infrastructure with New Hardware and VMware Technologies

Data Networks developed and executed a remote deployment strategy designed to maximize existing investments while introducing modern infrastructure capabilities. The project included the procurement and deployment of a new server platform featuring enhanced compute, memory, and storage resources capable of supporting both current workloads and future growth initiatives.

As part of the virtualization infrastructure upgrade effort, Data Networks deployed and configured new VMware vSphere Foundation licensing to provide ongoing support, compliance, and access to the latest VMware capabilities. The licensing refresh ensured the agency could continue leveraging VMware technologies while improving operational efficiency and long-term supportability.

A key project milestone involved deploying and configuring a new VMware vCenter Server Appliance to replace the organization’s malfunctioning management platform. The new vCenter deployment restored centralized management capabilities and provided administrators with improved visibility and control across the virtual environment.

The updated architecture was carefully designed to improve workload distribution, resource utilization, and infrastructure scalability. By modernizing both the hardware and management layers, the agency gained a more efficient and resilient platform capable of supporting evolving business requirements.

Improving Availability, Disaster Recovery, and Long-Term Manageability

Following deployment, Data Networks migrated existing virtual machines and associated data to the new environment while minimizing downtime and maintaining data integrity throughout the process. Comprehensive testing and validation activities were performed to verify system performance, licensing functionality, and infrastructure stability.

One of the most significant improvements delivered through the project was the introduction of VMware High Availability (HA) and Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) capabilities. These features help improve workload resiliency, automate resource balancing, and reduce the risk of service disruptions, creating a more robust virtualization infrastructure for mission-critical applications.

The new server platform was also designed to support future disaster recovery initiatives, providing the capacity and flexibility needed for replication workloads and recovery operations. Enhanced compute and memory resources enable the agency to better support critical services, including domain controllers, file servers, and other essential applications.

To ensure a successful transition, Data Networks provided detailed documentation, administrator training, and knowledge transfer sessions covering the new infrastructure, VMware vSphere Foundation licensing, and VMware vCenter administration.

The completed virtualization infrastructure modernization project delivered a secure, scalable, and highly manageable environment that improves operational efficiency, increases resiliency, and establishes a foundation for future growth. By replacing aging hardware, restoring centralized management, and introducing advanced VMware capabilities, the agency now benefits from a modernized platform capable of supporting its technology requirements for years to come.
