The Challenge: Managing Aging VMware Infrastructure Across Remote School Sites

This Maryland public school district needed to modernize its virtualization infrastructure while reducing operational costs and maintaining compatibility with existing systems. The district’s environment relied on VMware vSphere and vSAN ROBO clusters deployed across 14 separate school sites, supporting mission-critical workloads essential to daily educational operations.

As VMware licensing and support costs continued to increase, the district sought a more cost-effective virtualization strategy without sacrificing reliability, manageability, or security. In addition, the district wanted to extend the life of its existing management tools while simplifying administration across all remote locations.

To achieve these goals, the district required a carefully coordinated VMware to Hyper-V migration capable of transitioning nearly one hundred virtual workloads from VMware vSphere to Microsoft Hyper-V with minimal downtime and operational disruption.

The Solution: VMware to Hyper-V Migration with Centralized Windows Server Management

Data Networks delivered a comprehensive VMware to Hyper-V migration solution designed to modernize the district’s remote-site virtualization infrastructure while significantly reducing long-term licensing complexity.

The project included the deployment of 14 new Dell PowerEdge R660 servers, with one Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V host installed at each school site. These systems were integrated into the district’s existing Dell networking infrastructure using multiple 10Gb and 1Gb network connections, including dedicated out-of-band iDRAC management interfaces.

As part of the Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V deployment, Data Networks configured the Hyper-V role on all 14 servers and validated remote access and management functionality at every location. The engineering team also integrated Dell OpenManage with Windows Admin Center to provide centralized visibility, patching, health monitoring, and lifecycle management across all Hyper-V hosts.

To streamline ongoing administration, Windows Admin Center was deployed at the district’s central IT offices, enabling remote monitoring and management of all virtualization environments throughout the district from a single interface.

The most significant phase of the project involved the migration of 96 VMware virtual machines from the existing VMware vSphere and vSAN ROBO clusters to the new Hyper-V environment. Data Networks converted and migrated approximately 4–7 workloads per site while coordinating migration schedules to minimize outages and maintain operational continuity.

Following migration, Data Networks conducted detailed testing and validation procedures to confirm connectivity, system performance, workload stability, and successful integration with the district’s existing network infrastructure. Any issues identified during validation were addressed immediately to ensure production readiness across all sites.

The engagement also included comprehensive documentation, operational procedures, and knowledge transfer sessions for district IT staff. Administrators received training on using Windows Admin Center and Dell OpenManage to efficiently manage and monitor the new Hyper-V environment across all school locations.

Through this VMware to Hyper-V migration, the district now benefits from a more streamlined, scalable, and cost-effective virtualization platform deployed consistently across all 14 school sites.

Replacing VMware vSphere and vSAN ROBO clusters with Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V infrastructure has reduced licensing overhead while improving centralized management and operational efficiency. The new environment also enhances long-term supportability and positions the district for future growth without the complexity associated with maintaining distributed VMware infrastructure.

With 96 workloads successfully migrated, the district now operates a modernized virtualization environment that delivers improved flexibility, simplified administration, and reliable performance for educational and administrative systems alike.
