The Challenge: Aging Hyper-V Infrastructure and Limited Scalability
This regional North Carolina utility organization needed to modernize its aging virtualization infrastructure to improve performance, increase efficiency, and support future growth. The existing environment relied on Dell R640 servers running Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V with Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), but the platform had reached several operational and architectural limitations.
The organization faced a critical challenge in that there was no supported in-place upgrade path from the existing Windows Server 2019 S2D environment to Windows Server 2025 S2D, requiring a complete infrastructure rebuild. Additionally, the migration from Intel-based infrastructure to a new AMD-powered environment prevented the use of live migration technologies, making workload transitions more complex and requiring carefully coordinated migration planning.
Other challenges included inefficient power consumption from older Intel Cascade Lake processors, networking limitations caused by existing 10GbE connectivity, and an oversized storage configuration that did not align with actual workload utilization. The existing switchless S2D cluster architecture also limited scalability and long-term flexibility.
To address these issues, the organization partnered with Data Networks to execute a comprehensive Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V infrastructure upgrade focused on improving performance, scalability, storage efficiency, and long-term supportability.
The Solution: Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V Infrastructure Upgrade with AMD EPYC and NVMe Storage
Data Networks delivered a full Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V infrastructure upgrade built around modern Dell PowerEdge infrastructure, AMD EPYC processors, NVMe storage, and high-speed RDMA networking.
The solution included the deployment of three (3) Dell PowerEdge R7625 servers at the organization’s primary data center. Each server was configured with AMD EPYC processors, DDR5 memory, and high-capacity NVMe drives to deliver improved compute density, memory throughput, and storage performance while reducing power consumption and operational overhead.
As part of the deployment, Data Networks installed and configured Windows Server 2025 Datacenter Edition with the Hyper-V role enabled across all nodes. The team also implemented a new Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) cluster using 7.68TB NVMe drives configured with three-way mirroring to provide resilient, high-performance shared storage optimized for future scalability.
To modernize network performance, Data Networks configured 25GbE RDMA networking to support low-latency, high-throughput storage and Hyper-V traffic. The environment was carefully optimized for S2D communications and virtual machine mobility while maintaining the client’s preferred switchless architecture for simplified management.
The project also included the deployment of Windows Admin Center (WAC) integrated with Dell OpenManage for centralized infrastructure monitoring and lifecycle management. In addition, Data Networks onboarded the new Hyper-V cluster into Azure Arc, enabling hybrid cloud visibility, centralized policy management, and future Azure service integration.
A key phase of the project involved migrating workloads from the organization’s legacy Intel-based Hyper-V cluster to the new AMD-based Windows Server 2025 environment. Data Networks inventoried and assessed existing virtual machines, then coordinated the controlled shutdown, export, import, and validation of workloads to minimize operational disruption during migration.
Following migration, Data Networks conducted comprehensive validation testing, including cluster failover testing, storage performance analysis, and workload verification to ensure all systems operated correctly within the new environment.
The Result: High-Performance Hyper-V Infrastructure with Long-Term Scalability
Through this Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V infrastructure upgrade, the organization now benefits from a significantly more efficient, scalable, and future-ready virtualization platform.
The new Dell PowerEdge R7625 infrastructure delivers improved compute performance, higher memory bandwidth, faster NVMe storage, and lower power consumption compared to the previous generation Intel-based environment. The transition to 25GbE RDMA networking also dramatically improves storage and workload mobility performance while positioning the infrastructure for future expansion.
By integrating Azure Arc, Windows Admin Center, and Dell OpenManage, the organization now has centralized visibility and streamlined management capabilities across its entire virtualization environment. The modernized S2D architecture also provides a more cost-effective and right-sized storage platform aligned with actual workload requirements and projected five-year growth targets.
As a result, the organization now operates a resilient and highly supportable Hyper-V infrastructure designed to support both current operational needs and future hybrid cloud initiatives.
