Physical Security System for Government Healthcare Agency
Integrated Video Surveillance, Access Control, and Alarm System Upgrade with Verkada
Addressing Security Gaps and Modernizing Facility Operations
This Maryland state government healthcare agency faced growing concerns surrounding its aging physical security infrastructure. Existing surveillance coverage left critical blind spots throughout the facility, access control systems lacked standardization, and limited integration between security technologies made administration more complex than necessary. The agency also sought to improve remote visibility into security operations to better support modern workplace flexibility and teleworking initiatives.
To strengthen security, streamline operations, and improve risk management, the agency partnered with Data Networks to implement a comprehensive physical security system modernization project. The solution combined cloud-managed video surveillance, access control, alarm monitoring, and visitor communication technologies into a unified platform designed to improve security coverage, simplify management, and provide greater operational agility.
Deploying an Integrated Physical Security System
Data Networks designed and implemented a fully integrated physical security system built on the Verkada security platform. The deployment included new surveillance cameras, access control hardware, alarm systems, video intercoms, and centralized cloud-based management capabilities.
To eliminate surveillance blind spots and improve situational awareness, Data Networks installed five Verkada CD62 Indoor Dome Cameras equipped with onboard storage capable of retaining up to 30 days of high-definition video footage. New CAT6 cabling was deployed to support network connectivity and Power over Ethernet (PoE) requirements, ensuring reliable camera performance and centralized management.

The project also included a comprehensive access control modernization initiative. Data Networks installed Verkada AC42 four-door controllers, Verkada AD33 multi-format card readers, backup battery systems, and supporting power infrastructure to create a more secure and standardized access management platform. Existing users, groups, schedules, and access permissions were migrated into the new system to ensure a seamless transition without disrupting daily operations.

Additional door security enhancements included the installation of new electric strike-controlled doors, integration of existing magnetic lock-controlled entrances, and deployment of access control hardware for exterior double-door entry points. By consolidating access management into a cloud-based platform, the agency gained centralized control over facility access while improving administrative efficiency.
Enhancing Security Visibility and Operational Flexibility
Beyond surveillance and access control, Data Networks implemented Verkada alarm and intercom technologies to create a more comprehensive security ecosystem. New alarm keypads, wireless hubs, and door sensors were deployed to improve intrusion monitoring and provide centralized alarm management capabilities.

To strengthen visitor management and communication, the project included the installation of Verkada TD52 Video Intercoms along with dedicated iPad-based desk stations. These systems allow staff to visually verify visitors, communicate remotely, and securely grant access when appropriate. The cloud-based architecture also enables authorized personnel to manage security operations remotely, supporting flexible work arrangements without sacrificing visibility or control.
The new platform provides centralized management for video surveillance, access control, alarms, and intercom systems through a single interface, significantly reducing administrative complexity while improving response times and operational awareness. Features such as remote access, cloud-based management, automated alerts, and real-time monitoring help the agency proactively address security concerns while maintaining compliance with evolving security requirements.
To ensure long-term success, Data Networks provided comprehensive system configuration, administrator training, and knowledge transfer sessions covering all components of the deployment. The result is a modern physical security system that improves facility security, eliminates surveillance blind spots, standardizes access control, and delivers the flexibility needed to support both on-site and remote operational requirements.
